Checking for Understanding during the lesson
These colored cups help to determine what students are struggling or need help during the lesson. If I am teaching and a student changes their cup to yellow, this tells me they feel that they are falling behind. I might slow down or have the instructional assistant work with that student. If a student changes their cup to red, this tells me they are lost and need help right away. The students like the cups because it allows them to let me know they are struggling without their classmates knowing. It is nonthreatening for students and it allows me to make sure all students are on pace during the lesson. If I notice a small group of students mostly on red or yellow during the entire lesson I will pull those students for a fifteen minute RTI group at the end of the math lesson.

Math Anchor Charts
Each wall in my room is devoted to a different subject, and the charts I make during the lessons.

Math Anchor Chart
I will often make classroom anchor charts to go with my math lessons. I will keep these charts up for students to refer back to throughout the year. Students also keep notes in their math notebook.

Basketball during Math!
A way I like to increase focus and excitement during math class is to incorporate basketball. Students have to be on task during the lesson because they never know when their number will be called. If their number is called, they are on task and have the correct work they may shoot. If students score they earn points for their team.
