Reading to Achieve our Dreams!

CAFE...
I currently reading the book The Café Book , Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment & Instruction by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. This book has given me many great reading strategies to add to my book clubs and my individual student conferences. Because of this book I have tried to organize my book clubs around skills students need extra help with. This means I can have five very different readers who are all on different reading levels, but all working on the same skill. Students are also able to read more of the books they like to read this way. This type of grouping has become a hit in my classroom this year.

Reading is Thinking!
I believe in teaching students the different reading strategies to help them become better readers. Students learn that their brain should be thinking during their reading. There's nothing better than to see a student devour a book! This anchor chart is a poster on the wall throughout the year and also in their reader's binders.

Student Conferences
My goal is to have a one on one conference with each of my students every week. Here students are praised on what they are doing well in their reading. Also, they are given a goal to keep working towards to help improve their reading.
-
Book Clubs!
Book Clubs might be chosen through reading levels, student interest, or a skill those students all need extra help in. Book clubs are constantly changing.

Book Club procedures...
Students first meet together with the teacher to discuss the book and the skill they are working on. Then students have a book discussion on questions they had during their reading or parts they found confusing. Students are encouraged to work together and discuss their thinking. The cups are to help me see who is struggling and needs extra help. The green cup means that students has the skill and feel confident. The yellow cup means they are getting the skill but have not yet mastered the skill. The red cup means students would like extra help from the teacher or another group member who's cup is on green.

Reader's Binders...
Students keep a reader's binder during reading. Inside this binder students have their IDR assignments and notes, conferencing notes, book club assignments, comprehension strategy thinking stems and anchor charts from the mini lesson, goals, reading logs, journal entries from their books, and their I CAN statements. Students are very proud of their reading binders. It allows students to see their growth throughout the school year!
